Demo Explanation

Music shows have been a popular format since the inception of commercial radio. Lately, however, there’s been considerable problems adjusting these shows for availability in modern formats like podcasts and mp3 files for portable players.

KRLX plays more music shows than any other format, but the shows are not made available as podcasts for legal reasons. Letting listeners download music shows is a violation of copyright laws since they’re essentially downloading music without paying for it.

This particular program operates like most music shows on KRLX, with a DJ introducing and playing music. What this particular DJ is playing over the air is YouTube files, a practice that occurs occasionally on KRLX today. Since this show is utilizing content already available online thanks to sites like YouTube, it could be argued that this program should also be available for viewing at anytime. Creating shows with content entirely from other sources and websites diverts issues of legality away from the station and toward those websites that provided the content.

This demo in particular looks less like radio than most of the other shows produced on this website. But this program does shares with radio is arguably its most important attribute: the sense of community it instills in its listeners. Like the second demo, The Call-In Show, users are encouraged to respond to what they’re seeing through video.

Listeners can respond to the songs by uploading their own video clip to either further the discussion the DJ began, start their own discussion, or simply upload a video that they want to share with the audience. In this way, the listeners can enter the discussion on level that is similar to the DJ's, by choosing which songs they will or won’t listen to and sharing their content with the audience. And since this show would be available for download (the version that is presented here), listeners can continue to add clips long after the shows initial broadcast.

When radio first began people were amazed by the amount of control they had. In this particular demo, I’m attempting to give the listeners more control of the show’s content.
